Rough & Tumble Wesley

Well... it happened.  One of my babies broke a limb.

This past Saturday the family was at Van's post-season party for his flag football team at Coach Cyrus's house.  The boys were bouncing on the trampoline and the parents were eating a little nosh and finally getting to chat about each other and things other than the game/practice at hand.  After about only 15 min or so Wes popped out of the trampoline net through an opening in the side.  He was surprised but fine, and insisting to go back in.  We said okay but asked that the number of kids on the trampoline be reduced.  Everyone was amenable so he waited his turn, had a snack and got back on.

Sure enough, after about 10 min more of bouncing he popped out again.  This time all I heard was a very dire scream.  Parents know the scream.  The scream of "this is serious, I'm in pain and need help NOW!"  It's a scream that goes straight through your heart and pumps adrenaline into your legs, propelling you with superhero like speed to where ever your child is.  This is what Josh and I both experienced.

We got him inside to assess the situation, and shoulder and elbow issues were ruled out. When he couldn't calm down or move his right hand, we coaxed him into extending his arm and there was a very discernible divot in his arm just above the wrist.  We got him into the car, arranged for Van to stay with his friends (which the other parents were happy to do) and zoomed off to Longmont Urgent Care.

They saw us pretty quickly, and the whole visit was rather speedy.  We saw a nice doctor right away, got xrays and Wes was splinted all within an hour.  They gave him a good dose of Tylenol, and as soon as that kicked in he seemed to be much calmer.  When the splint and sling went on it was like magic though!  Just that support under his arm was a huge, huge difference.

Back at home Wes snuggled on the couch and plugged into some Netflix of his choice.  Kurt & Lindsay were super helpful and picked up Van from the party and brought him home.  (So, so thankful for their help!!)   He got a little more Tylenol on a 4hr schedule and even made it through the night fairly well.

The whole experience was stressful for all of us (except maybe Van).  Josh and I could do nothing really but comfort - all we could do was sit by and listen to our baby cry and tell us how much he hurt.  It was short lived, but at the time it felt like an eternity.  Wes was a super trooper through all of it!  He tried his best to be responsive and cooperated as much as he could - he really is a tough li'l guy.  We are both so, so proud of him.

Now that the swelling has gone down, the shock is past, Wes is his old self!  He's adapting to being a lefty very well - eating with no problems, playing video games, getting dressed, playing with Molly and going potty.

UPDATE:   We go to Children's Hospital tomorrow to see the orthopedic doctor and get a cast on.  He's quite excited to pick out his cast color and be able to go back to school and show all his friends!
