Shreddin' in Breck

Kurt and Linds were back in town for just a few days to finalize the sale of their house and pack up, but before all that business started they asked if we'd like to head up to the mountains for a day to ski and snowboard.  Uh.... Yes please!  So we got a couple rooms at the Residence Inn right by Peak 9 in Breckenridge, drove up Sunday with plans to spend all day Monday on the slopes.

We got into Breckenridge around 4:30p.m.  The town was just like a picture in a magazine - snowy roads, lots of bundled people walking down the sidewalks - many carrying sleds or snowboards - steep, sloping roof lines of buildings all decked out in twinkle lights, and all of this surrounded by huge, snowy mountain peaks growing a deeper purple as the sun continued to drop.

Food & fun at Swiss Haven
Just before 6 we bundled up ourselves and joined the fray on the streets of downtown.  We walked to Swiss Haven restaurant for fondue!  The boys have had fondue before, but were more interested in the pasta pesto listed on the kids menu - fine by me.  They had that while we dipped veggies and bread into a bubbling pot mix of Appenzeller and Gruyere cheese in the middle of the table.  BUT then they saw the grill come out, and the huge platter of meat, veggies and cheese that came with it, and even after a big bowl of pasta those two were suddenly hungry for a second dinner!  There was plenty for everyone.  The big people chatted of weddings, future trips, our expectations for the next day and just caught up with life we'd missed being away from one another.  Our hearts and bellies were full and it was a really wonderful night.

Monday morning we got to business!  The boys got up pretty easy considering they were up at least twice in the middle of the night arguing about cover stealing (once involving mom.)  We got breakfast, got checked out of the hotel, and to the Snow School nice and early so Van and Wes would have time to get geared up.  Really though, all Josh and I had to do was sign a few things and say our good byes... it was super simple!  There was a moment as we walked back to our car where we thought, "Well, now what do we do?"  We ride!!

Kurt and Linds met us at the bottom of the gondola and we rode on up to Peak 7.  We all rode the Independence Chair over there for the morning.  It was perfect!  Big, wide groomers with good corduroy still available, patches of trees to swing around (I love those), rolling dips and gentle curves - all good things.

By lunch time my legs were done.  Josh and I decided to go see if we could peek at the kids, and Kurt and Linds were going to traverse the mountain over to meet us at Beaver Run.  The kids were no where to be found, so we headed up to the Coppertop Bar at the base of the Beaver Run Chair, and we scored a great table there right by the front windows with a view of the mountain.  Kurt and Linds joined us just a little while later.  We noshed on amazing grilled cheese sandwiches, tomato soup, and had a beverage or two.

Josh and Kurt took a run down Columbia and Sundown there at Peak 9, then Kurt headed all the way
back to Peak 6 to check out some runs he'd been eyein' up earlier.  Josh, Linds and I packed up and headed down to The Maggie to meet up with the boys who would be done soon.

I was so excited to see Van and Wes!!  The school had taken pictures of them for us, but I wanted to see them in action.  They came up from the base of Quicksilver Chair with their instructor, Steve, and were so happy to see us - huge smiles from a great day!  Steve said Van was doing really great, just about ready to connect his S-turns!  Wesley had a rough start but once it clicked he started to do really, really well, too.  They both strapped in and showed us a little falling-leaf action there at the base.  Oh!  It just made my heart so, so happy to see them do this!

Van is so excited with this new sport

Josh and I always said we wouldn't take the boys skiing/snowboarding until they asked for it.  We wanted to them to show interest before we invested in this hobby.  Well, they finally asked... and I think we made the right decision.  Van is already asking when he can go up again!  I'm pretty sure Wes is still tired from the whole weekend.  We'll go again soon though!!
