Van's First Trip to California

Van had his first plane ride! A direct flight from Denver to San Jose at 8 a.m. took us to the Bay Area for the weekend. Van was pretty good on the flight out, too. There were about 6 other babies on the flight, so we didn't feel so alone. The flight back was post-bed time, so he just slept in his sling the whole way.

Friday we relaxed at Curt & Dyan's house with the kids, catching up on the last two and a half years. Saturday we headed up to Palo Alto to have coffee at Cafe del Doge (yum!!) and walk down University Ave. We ran into the younger two Hughes brothers and met up with them again later, along with their mom and Josh's mom, for lunch. What used to be a rather quiet meal (the Hughes boys aren't known for being gabby) has become a chat-fest about our kids - it was awesome.

That night was Aaron & Gina's wedding - the catalyst for the trip. It was simple and beautiful - in the San Francisco Zoo, antelope and zebra right behind the bride and groom during the ceremony, fantastic music and a score of homemade cheesecakes for dessert... and most importantly Aaron and Gina looked very, very happy.

Sunday we introduced Van to Cafe Barone's in Menlo Park - we used to walk here from our apartment for breakfast, coffee and people watching on weekends. Bill & Miki met us there and we all enjoyed a beautiful sunny morning al fresco.

We had a good 7 hours to kill before our flight so we headed up to the city to say hello and play a little tourist bingo with Van. The Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz, Ghirardelli Square, as well as a walk through Little Italy and Chinatown.

It was a great weekend, but we are glad to be home. (all pictures are forthcoming)

Next trip for Van = a road trip to the ranch in Texas at Thanksgiving!
