Winter Park Getaway

We had a mini vacation this Labor Day weekend up in the Rocky Mountains at Winter Park Resort - a place we hadn't visited yet. Two nights at the Zephyr Mountain Lodge was just what the Dr. ordered for this family! We popped our ears and watched the temperature drop as we headed up I-70 and over Berthoud Pass Friday evening. We checked into the hotel and were pleasantly surprised at the size of our condo! There was lots of space for the kids to spread out and play, seperate bedroom, big bath and a full kitchen (not that I planned on cooking for the next 48 hours). Van got the "big bed" in the living room all to himself (a pull-out sofa) and spread out on it like a champ. Wes was in his pack-n-play in our bedroom and actually slept through the night!! There was one little hiccup when a train somewhere near by decided to blow its horn at 3:15 a.m., but the boys took to sleeping in a strange place very smoothly. I was very impressed, proud and thankful.

Saturday was our big day out and we started with an awesome breakfast at a little place that came highly recommended: Rise & Shine Bakery & Cafe. My 'Irish Benedict' was scrape-the-plate yummy and the coffee was pretty great, too. The best part though was that we could see our breath in the chilly morning air - after a pretty hot summer it felt sooooo good!

Back at the resort we got our activity passes, and Van chose to do the alpine slide first. He and Dad took a chair lift to the top - this was a big hit and Van kept asking to ride the "hoola hoop" all day (I'm guessing cause the bar that comes down looks kinda like a hoola hoop from the ground - not real sure where he got that). He did the slide twice, got his face painted with an awesome green dragon, rode the zip line, hit the bouncy castle twice and made sure he had sufficient playground time - it was full day and he was tuckered out at the end of the day! We all were.

Sunday we all lounged in bed a while (after getting up at 6:30 and piling in Mom and Dad's bed of course) before getting around. The rain predicted decided to move on, so it was a gorgeous bluebird morning in the mountains. Van said "Bye mountains!" and we drove on down the hill. It was a fun and easy little getaway, and we'll definitely be back!
