Quick summer visit from Nana & PopPop

This was the first of two summer visits from Nana & PopPop this year!  This one was centered around a Jethro Tull concert at Red Rocks.  Nana & PopPop had never been to Red Rocks before, so this was a treat for everyone!

Before the show happened though, PopPop was stoked to take the grandkids fishing.  Each of 'em got a pole and bait and we headed to McCall Lake just west of Longmont.  It was slow going at first, but soon the kids were catching all sorts of little fish!  They'd catch 'em, reel 'em in and put them in a bucket of water for a bit before tossing 'em back.  It was a hoot!

We spent an afternoon at Sunflower Farm as well.  The Boulder Creek Festival was happening so we got to go check all that out - there was some mini roller coaster riding for Van & Wes, as well as time in the "water bubbles" for all three kids.  And at Oskar Blues in Lyons Van and Wes discovered the love of the arcade.  Yes, this was their first experience with a dark room filled with big machines that light up, make lots of noise and only play one game a piece.

The night of the concert it was time for the big people to have some fun!  Josh offered to drive us all, and we rented a big SUV to hold all of us.  It was chilly when we arrived but we were able to have a little tailgating time.  After a bit we headed to the stairs.

Now, if you've never been to Red Rocks you may not understand that you really have to earn your show (in addition to paying for the ticket).  Let's start with the fact that we are about 6,400' above sea level.  To get from the parking lot to the entrance is a 5 min walk down a paved road - no biggie.  It's even down hill!  Once you get to the entrance you see it is a set of wide stairs, so you go up... about 100 steps.  Now you're ready to show your ticket, have your bag searched and continue up more steps!  From here it is about 140 steps to the top deck (where most of the booze and food is).

We found seats about 2/3 of the way up.  There was a spectacular view of Denver with the sun setting behind us, and it wasn't too far of a hike to the vendors and bathrooms at the top.  Nana was just happier than she could say!  We all had our little stadium chairs, got a beverage and settled in to enjoy Jethro Tull by Ian Anderson with the Colorado Symphony.  Ian was great!  He took at break about half way through.  At that time the wind really picked up and the temperature dropped.  We all started looking down the row at each other to see if anyone else was ready to call it a night... we were.  We'd heard most of the songs we came to hear, had a great night up til now and were happy to call it.  I love that my whole family can come together and do stuff like this.  We had such a good time.
