Can't Buy Me Love.... but I Can Buy a Ticket!
Josh and I had the incredible opportunity to see Sir Paul McCartney this summer!! Yes, THE Paul McCartney... the former BEATLE! WOO HOOOOOOO!!!
The closest he was coming to Denver was Oklahoma City. Maybe not what you'd think of first as "romantic getaway" but we made the best of the situation... its was PAUL McCARTNEY! (Yes, he deserves a first and last name at all times) We used points to book a quick flight. Our hotel (also on points) was directly across the street from the venue, so no need to rent a car. Bonus! We looked up the best steak house within walking distance and made a reservation.
OKC was hot. The weatherman said 94 but it felt like 104. We hung in our room and had a drink or two.
Dinner at Mickey Mantel's Steakhouse was nice. Not thrilling, but nice. The drinks and the crab dip starter were the real highlights. We branched out and ordered a dry aged steak - neither of us had ever tried one and this one was big enough to share, so we went for it. It was ordered rare. Drum roll: it was too rare. It was grilled one side and slightly warmed on the other. Even Josh said it wasn't quite done enough for his liking. Add to this issue that the 22oz steak we ordered had about 10oz (generous) of meat on it, and we were a little underwhelmed with the main course. The service was good, the atmosphere was nice for the date night we were on and the other courses were yummy. I'll take it!
Time for the show!!!
There was no opener. Who could open for Paul McCartney? We found our way to the floor and our seats - Section 7, Row C, Seats 10 & 11. We didn't wait long for the show to start. Josh had looked up the set list earlier, so he knew what was coming. I was totally stoked when he came out in his blue mandarin collared suit and laid right into Hard Days Night - woo hoo, here we go!!!
The set list went like this:
Then the encore!...
He played and sang and talked for almost three hours! No intermission, no breaks - he's a machine! I was hoarse from singing and yelling all night. It was an amazing show. As I write I'm listening to some of these songs again and smiling. Hearing artists play live gives another level of connection to the music, and this was no exception. I've been a Beatles fan as long as I can remember - listening to my parents' old LPs in my room on a little turntable on the floor (couldn't dance too much or it'd skip) - this was the cherry on my Beatles sundae. Thanks mom & dad!! <3 <3
